Lycopene can give someone a lot of health benefits including helping with prostate cancer. The prostate is a small gland around the size of a golf ball.
It has two important roles one is to help create a creamy liquid which safely transports sperm. The second major job of the prostate is to release semen during ejaculation.
Put it this way without the prostate than there probably would be no babies and the human race would be extinct like the dinosaurs.
The risk of prostate cancer in men is actually very high and is the most common type of cancer in men that are seniors. Not many people are sure on exactly how cancer gets started, however many health experts agree that it has something to do with damaged cells.
What is interesting about prostate cancer is that the disease can sometimes spread very slowly and sometimes it can spread fast. The quicker someone catches this disease the higher the chance that it can be defeated.
If the cancer reaches the blood stream than that is very bad news because it can spread to another part of the body and this is called metastasis.
Lycopene is a carotene and is common in bright fruits and vegetables such as tomatoes and watermelons. Carotenes are responsible for helping with plants photosynthesis which is where they can convert sunlight into usable energy.
Lycopene can be good for prostate cancer prevention because it has antioxidants which may reduce toxins and free radicals that can damage cells, which is a big culprit with cancer. What makes lycopene interesting is that people who have prostate cancer have low levels of lycopene in their system.
In a study done Illinois patients between the age of 50 and over 80 half of the group received 30 milligrams of lycopene while the other group received a placebo medicine with nothing in it. The result of the study revealed that the group that had lycopene had a significant increase in antioxidants in the blood stream.
It’s not concrete that lycopene can prevent prostate cancer, however I don’t think it’s going to hurt.
Other benefits of lycopene include improving heart health, vision health, preventing osteoporosis, diabetes and reducing the aging affect. Eating tomatoes is always a great idea because of the antioxidants, however consuming too much pizza or spaghetti can have unwanted side effects like weight gain.
Another idea is just to consume a supplement which has this vitamin. It may sound like an easy thing to do however shopping for a supplement can be a fairly complicated and confusing process.
