If your wondering do grapes contain resveratrol well they do except not that much. Maybe you have heard about resveratrol in the news since lately this nutrient has gotten a lot of buzz. The reason for its popularity is because many people are excited about the idea of extending life, which is what some people believe resveratrol can do.
In the early years of 2000 scientist started testing this substance with various forms of life such as fruit flies, mice, worms and yeast. They discovered that resveratrol activated something called SIRT1, which is a gene that enables caloric restricting.
Caloric restriction is the method of a person consuming all the important minerals and nutrients yet not consuming as much calories as the average person. Numerous studies on animals and humans show that by reducing calories it can extend life and fight disease.
Exactly how it can do this is debatable, however some health experts believe that caloric restriction boost autophagy, which is the process of cells removing damage and healing itself. It can also lower weight which puts less pressure on the heart and organs.
What’s clear is that by resveratrol activating the SIRT1 gene it can enable someone to use less calories automatically and studies show that resveratrol can extend the life of various life forms by as much as 70%.
This herb also has a ton of other health benefits such as weight loss, controlling diabetes, skin care, fighting cancer and detoxing the body to name just a few. How someone can get this nutrient is by consuming grapes, wine, peanuts, blueberries, strawberries, nuts, chocolate and by taking a supplement.
The key thing to remember about grapes is that only the skin has resveratrol. This is why red wine has much more resveratrol because white wine does not use the skin of grapes. What is interesting is that grapes that are grown in northern environments like Europe and Canada have more resveratrol than if they were grown in the south, maybe because the plant grows more skin to protect itself from the cold.
Also organically grown grapes have more of this substance, probably because toxins can kill of this nutrient.
Understanding exactly how much resveratrol is in grapes is very challenging because the longer this plant is exposed to the air the less potent its nutrients are. This is also very similar to blueberries and strawberries. With peanuts there is somewhere around 75 mgs of resveratrol in an ounce. Chocolate has on average around 18 mg’s a serving which is fairly tiny.
Of course supplements can contain resveratrol dosage above 1000 mg’s which is equal to hundreds of glasses of red wine. The great news about supplements is that there are no unwanted negative side effects such as getting overweight with peanuts and alcohol poisoning with wine.
The bad news with supplements is that many companies are trying to cash in on the buzz surrounding resveratrol and may offer poor quality products. It’s not easy to identify which brand to go with because it might seem that they all are saying the same thing.
